To many people skateboarding can be a number of things. People generally claim skateboarding to be a lifestyle, an art, a sport, a drug, a form of transportation, a form of exercise, and probably a couple more things. While all these can be true depending on your viewpoint, to me, skateboarding is an activity.
When people claim skateboarding to be a lifestyle I am honestly not quite sure what they mean. According to google, a lifestyle is a way a person lives. Yes, I live to skate, among other things, but I do not skate to live. Skateboarding does not bring me a paycheck.
Skateboarding is an art. It can be how you interact with your environment. You can be all artsy fartsy with your griptape design or what you choose to wear. It can come down to your style, how you ride on your skateboard to your trick selection. Everybody does it differently.
Skateboarding is a sport to those who compete in contests, such as the X Games, Street League, and soon the Olympics. You can be competitive in nature by competing with your friends or anyone really.
Skateboarding is a form of transportation, which is quite obvious.
Skateboarding can be a drug by hooking people on the way it feels to land tricks and whatnot; the feeling of accomplishment.
All of these things can be true, and to me it boils down to skateboarding being an activity. I skateboard to enjoy myself. It is something I can go out and do for anywhere from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours. I can go with someone. I can go alone. To me at this point skateboardings is simply something to do.
It requires physical movement which can be considered exercise. You can skate down the street and get tired out. It is a good form of cardio.
I do not consider skateboarding a hobby. Maybe to some people it is, but to me and people I know, it is more consuming than I think a hobby is. Google states a hobby is an activity done in one's leisure time for pleasure. ...well that I can agree on. Perhaps skateboarding is a hobby. The word hobby sounds a bit trivializing.
Google defines activity as the condition in which things are being done or a thing that a person or group has done. A very vague definition to say the least. Oh well, this is it for the day.
